The oceans contain great mysteries within their depths. While many of these mysteries have been explained by scientists and analysts, there are still quite a few unexplained oceanic enigmas that intrigue us. With that said, check out these 10 Most Mysterious Ocean Facts. 10. Saltstraumen Maelstrom - The word maelstrom, a synonym in English for a tumult, literal or figurative, is believed to be derived from the Dutch word ''malen,'' to grind. An ancient legend has it that a pair of magical millstones were once dropped into the sea off the coast of Norway and that their eternal grinding of sea salt produces the lethal eddies of the maelstrom. 9. Cyanobacteria - The majority of the World’s oxygen comes from tiny ocean organisms called Cyanobacteria or blue-green algae. These Phytoplankton are mostly microscopic, single-celled photosynthetic organisms that live suspended in water. Like land plants, they take up carbon dioxide, make carbohydrates using light energy, and then release oxygen. 8. Only 5% of the Oceans have been explored - An astonishing 86% of all plants and animals on land and 91% of those in the seas or oceans have yet to be named and cataloged. Yet much about the planet's oceans remains a mystery. 7. Bioluminescence - Wouldn't it be cool to have a flashlight built into your fingertips whenever you needed light? No more fumbling for your car keys in the dark, or trying to navigate over uneven terrain at dusk. Though us humans can't create our own light, some animals do, in a process called bioluminescence. 6. Red Tide - Red tide is a naturally-occurring, higher-than-normal concentration of the microscopic algae called Karenia brevis. This organism produces a toxin that affects the central nervous system of fish so that they are paralyzed and cannot breathe. 5. Brinicle - We’re used to seeing icicles form on tree branches and the eaves of buildings, but they can also form deep beneath the ocean, creating what’s known as a brine icicle, or brinicle. These icy underwater tentacles are often referred to as “sea stalactites” because of their bizarre appearance. As this salty water leaks from the sea ice, the surrounding water becomes more saline, lowering its freezing temperature and increasing its density. 4. Baltic Sea Anomaly - Explorers discovered the odd-shaped object on the ocean bed of the Baltic Sea in June 2011. The 26ft tall object was discovered by Swedish explorer Peter Lindberg and his Ocean X team of marine explorers during a dive searching for a shipwreck. 3. Sea Foam - Seafoam is a natural phenomenon of the ocean which involves the formation of white lathery substance which floats on the surface of the water and gets accumulated at seashores. The formation of seafoam is seen in several parts of the world and continues to intrigue people even today. Most seafoam is not harmful to humans and is often an indica 2. Longest Wave on Earth - Twice a year, between the months of February and March, the Atlantic Ocean waters roll up the Amazon river in Brazil generating the longest wave on the Earth. 1. Convergence of Baltic and North Seas - This oceanic phenomenon has been a highly debated topic. The convergent point of the North and the Baltic Seas occurs in the province of Skagen in Denmark. However, because of the differing rates of densities of the seas’ waters, the sea waters continue to remain separate in spite of their convergence. We hope you enjoyed the video.
