But more than 30 years later and it’s still not finished. In fact, it’s even earned itself a nickname-- the Hotel of Doom. This nickname comes from a few places. First, the hotel’s entire inside is incomplete and it’s completely abandoned. Second, construction was done in concrete, and some experts believe the hotel could fall apart if construction moves forward without necessary renovations. But North Korea isn’t giving up quite yet. Over the past few years, multiple companies have tried their hand at reviving construction. The epic building has even earned itself a second nickname-- the 105 Building-- after its 105-stories. And standing at 1,080 feet tall, the huge glass-panelled skyscraper is impossible to miss. So, what has North Korea been doing with the building while it waits in limbo? It’s been the setting for fireworks shows, LED light shows (that were installed when the glass panels were put on for more than $180 million), and it’s been a backdrop for photos and artistic performances. But that’s not what a hotel is meant to be used for, and the Hotel of Doom was supposed to be epic-- with revolving restaurants on its top floors and 3,000 guest rooms. So, what’s next for the abandoned Ryugyong? Will it ever live up to its potential? Here’s everything you need to know-- including the huge estimated cost required to finally complete this forgotten building.
