Whilst working one evening in North Sumatra, Indonesia, Joshua Hutagalung would suddenly make a space discovery as an old meteorite fell into his home. The media across the globe began to take an interest in this space rock. Eventually, Hutagalung sold it for a small fortune. Yet later on, it seems the meteorite may have actually been worth millions! However, is this actually the case? Or are people getting their maths a little wrong? Today, we’re going to explore this interesting story. As well as briefly examine the amazing Hoba meteorite. Now for the spoiler paragraph. If you like surprises, we suggest you stop reading and watch the video multiple times. Firstly, we’ll look at the back story of what’s known as the Kolang Meteorite and how it came to be in Hutagalung’s possession. After the story went viral, American Jared Collins got in touch in order to purchase the piece of history. We’ll examine how much money was exchanged and compare it to the median wage in Indonesia. However, Collins was buying for his collection. Instead, he shipped it back to the US for Jay Piatek to enjoy. We’ll see how smaller fragments of the Kolang meteorite that landed nearby went up for sale on eBay and why this could mean Hutagalung was ripped off. There’s the investigation by The Lunar And Planetary Institute that found out just how old this rock is. It’s pretty astonishing as it’s nearly as old as our planet!
